In the 2024 NEET-UG results announced by the NTA, 67 candidates achieved a perfect score of 720/720. Interestingly, 44 of them received grace marks due to an incorrect answer to a basic physics question based on an old Class 12 NCERT textbook.

The issue arose from a multiple-choice physics question about atoms. The correct answer was based on the newer version of the NCERT textbook, but many students answered according to the outdated version, which led to confusion. As a result, the NTA awarded grace marks to those who chose the third option, stating both statements were correct.

Since 2019, there haven't been more than three toppers in any NEET UG year. However, this year’s physics question on atoms resulted in an unprecedented number of high scores. The correct answer involved understanding that while atoms are electrically neutral, not all are stable, particularly radioactive ones. Despite the NTA's provisional answer key confirming the correct option, many candidates challenged it due to the outdated textbook reference.

The NTA acknowledged the widespread use of older textbooks and awarded grace marks to ensure fairness. This decision led to 44 candidates improving their scores from 715 to a perfect 720, resulting in an unusually high number of NEET-UG toppers.

The NTA plans to address this issue with NCERT to prevent future discrepancies. Despite 67 students achieving a perfect score, not all will secure admission to AIIMS due to the tie-breaker policy in place. This year’s exam also saw a record number of registrations, with 23.81 lakh students, an increase from last year’s 20.87 lakh.

Among the top scorers, the majority are from Rajasthan (11), followed by Tamil Nadu (8), Maharashtra (7), and four each from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. The combination of the easier paper and increased registrations also contributed to the record number of toppers.
