NCERT Clarifies Class 9 Maths Syllabus 2026-27: No Topics Removed, Chapters Reorganised

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has clarified that the revised Class 9 Maths syllabus 2026-27 should not be judged only by the number of chapters included in the textbook.

NCERT explained that the curriculum developed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 focuses on Curricular Goals, Competencies and Learning Outcomes rather than just chapter-wise content.

The council stated that the recently released syllabus was a draft prepared to collect feedback from teachers, students, authors and education experts. After reviewing the suggestions, NCERT and CBSE will release the final version in October.

NCERT Explains New Curriculum Structure

According to NCERT, the revised curriculum follows a goal-based approach.

Curricular Goals define the broader learning objectives of a subject at a particular stage.
Competencies explain what students should be able to understand and achieve.
Learning Outcomes provide measurable learning targets for teaching and assessment.

NCERT said textbooks are only one tool to achieve these learning objectives. The arrangement of topics into chapters is a teaching strategy designed to improve students’ understanding and skills.

The council clarified that chapters may be reorganised to create better connections between concepts, but this does not mean that topics have been removed.

No Topics Removed from Class 9 Maths Syllabus

Addressing concerns about the Class 9 Maths draft syllabus, NCERT confirmed that no major topics have been deleted.

Instead, some concepts that were earlier taught as separate chapters have now been integrated into other chapters to create a more connected learning approach.

For example, topics related to Lines and Angles have been included in the Class 9 Part 2 chapters:

Propositions and Their Converses
Quadrilaterals

NCERT also mentioned that students have already studied basic Lines and Angles concepts in the Class 6 Ganita Prakash textbook.

Euclidean Geometry Topics Included in Class 9 Maths

NCERT also clarified the status of Euclidean geometry topics in the revised Class 9 Mathematics curriculum.

The council stated that concepts related to two-dimensional geometry, including:

Polygons
Circles
Parallel lines
Intersecting lines

are covered across different chapters of the Class 9 Maths textbook.

These topics are distributed across Chapters 5, 6, 9, 12 and 13 instead of being placed under one separate chapter.

Algorithms Added in Class 9 Maths Curriculum

NCERT explained that algorithms have been included in the Class 9 Maths curriculum because of the increasing importance of technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The council said students need to understand mathematical ideas behind concepts such as:

Algorithms
Data structures
Running-time efficiency

These concepts can help students develop logical thinking and understand the mathematical foundation behind modern technologies.

New NCERT Textbooks Focus on Skill-Based Learning

NCERT said the revised textbooks for Mathematics, Social Science and other subjects are designed according to the learning goals mentioned in NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023.

The new approach focuses on:

NCERT has advised schools, teachers and educational boards to plan classroom teaching and assessments based on students’ competencies rather than only focusing on textbook chapters.

The council stated that the revised curriculum aims to provide students with a more integrated and meaningful learning experience.
