NEET UG 2024: SC Notifies Centre and NTA on CBI Investigation into Paper Leak Claims

The Supreme Court has issued notices to private parties following a plea from the National Testing Agency (NTA) requesting the transfer of cases from various high courts regarding the NEET UG row to the apex court to avoid multiple litigations. Additionally, the Court has also issued notices to the Centre and the NTA on a plea seeking a CBI probe into allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities in NEET UG 2024.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta acknowledged the NTA's submission that several pleas seeking the cancellation of NEET UG 2024 due to allegations of question paper leaks and malpractices are pending in various high courts. The bench scheduled these matters for hearing on July 8.

Furthermore, the vacation bench has sought responses from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Bihar government within two weeks regarding the PIL. It indicated that the PIL will be addressed along with other pending cases on July 8, when the Court resumes after the summer vacation.

Meanwhile, the NTA expressed its intention to withdraw three other petitions seeking the transfer of cases from high courts to the Supreme Court. These petitions related to the granting of grace marks to 1,563 candidates due to time loss during the May 5 examination.

The counsel for the NTA confirmed that the issue had been resolved and stated that they would inform the high court about the decision to cancel the compensatory marks awarded to 1,536 candidates, as per the order of the Supreme Court dated June 13.

In the midst of the controversy surrounding the NEET UG examination, both the Centre and the NTA informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that they had revoked the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates. These candidates have the option to either retake the test or forego the compensatory marks awarded for time loss.

The NEET UG examination, held on May 5 across 4,750 centers, saw approximately 24 lakh candidates. Though the results were initially expected on June 14, they were announced earlier on June 4 due to the expedited evaluation of answer sheets.
The allegations have sparked protests in various cities and led to cases being filed in seven high courts and the Supreme Court. In Delhi, numerous students protested on June 10, demanding an investigation into the alleged irregularities.
A record number of 67 students scored a perfect 720, with six from a center in Faridabad, Haryana, fueling suspicions of irregularities. It has been suggested that grace marks contributed to 67 students sharing the top rank.
