The Supreme Court has issued notices to private parties on pleas filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). These pleas seek to transfer cases related to the NEET-UG row from various high courts to the Supreme Court to avoid multiple litigations. Earlier, a vacation bench had issued similar notices on June 14.
The NTA has highlighted that several pleas seeking cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 due to alleged question paper leaks and other malpractices are pending in different high courts. Advocate Vardhaman Kaushik, representing the NTA, requested the transfer of these new pleas to the apex court, arguing they deal with the same issues.
Advocate Vardhman Kaushik, appearing for the NTA, on Monday urged a bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala to transfer the fresh batch of petitions to the apex court as they pertain to the same issue.
"Issue notice and tag," the bench said, adding that these petitions will be heard along with the pending pleas on the NEET-UG dispute on July 18.
In a recent affidavit, the Centre informed the court that data analytics by IIT Madras found no evidence of widespread malpractice in NEET-UG 2024, supporting a normal distribution of marks. The court had previously suggested a re-test if malpractices were widespread.
The NTA also submitted an affidavit detailing mark distribution analysis nationally, statewide, and at city levels. The Supreme Court had expressed concerns over the integrity of the exam process during earlier hearings.
NEET-UG, conducted by NTA, saw participation from over 23.33 lakh students across 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 overseas cities. It is the qualifying exam for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and related courses in India's government and private institutions.
