NEET UG 2026: MCC Revises Counselling and Admission Rules; Know What Changed

NEET UG 2026 counselling is expected to begin soon. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced several changes to the undergraduate medical admission process. This was done through the notice that the ministry gave on 28th July to the counseling authorities in all states and Union Territories.

These changes are meant to make the admission process more understandable, fast and easy for those aspiring to be medics.

According to the new NEET UG 2026 counseling rules, any student allocated a seat, and then chooses to upgrade in the next counseling round will not be required to attend physically at the allotted college. He/she will attend the next counseling round without having to go to the college.

The allotted seat will continue being valid while the student looks for the upgrade.

MCC has also introduced an online resignation facility. Candidates who want to leave an allotted seat can now complete the resignation process through the MCC counselling portal. They won’t have to visit the allotted medical college, provided they resign within the prescribed deadline and follow MCC rules.

Changes have also been announced for candidates applying under the NRI quota. Students seeking NRI quota seats in deemed medical universities can upload the required documents directly through the NEET UG counselling portal.

Trainings were held by MCC in the month of May and June in 2026 for medical institutions and concerned authorities. This was done to give information regarding the modified counseling process and the implementation of the new rules.

The committee has requested the counseling authorities of the state and union territory to provide detailed information related to the availability of seats and fees for colleges. NEET UG re-exam results were announced earlier this month, and MCC is expected to release the NEET UG 2026 counselling schedule soon.
