NEET UG Counselling 2026: Avoid These Mistakes That Can Cancel Your Medical Seat

A good NEET UG 2026 score will make you eligible for the admission race. You are confirmed for the medical seat after successful counselling and college admission procedure.

Mistakes in registration, choice filling, verification of documents and college reporting will result in seat cancellation. As per the counselling round, the candidate may have to forfeit the security deposit or be ineligible for further rounds.

The NEET UG 2026 re-exam results can be checked from the official NTA site. MCC is supposed to release the counselling schedule and registration link for NEET UG counselling on their portal. The candidate activities page shows that details will be updated soon.

The National Medical Commission has released the 2026 MBBS seat matrix for colleges not under Institutes of National Importance. It is advised for the candidates to verify the final seat matrix on MCC and state portal before choice filling as there will be changes during various rounds.

Mistakes to Avoid During NEET UG Counselling

Candidates should read the counselling bulletin before completing any step. A small error can block admission even when the candidate has a strong NEET rank.

Filling Choices without Checking your Rank

Candidates apply to mostly the top medical colleges offered by the government. As such, their options are very limited when they fall outside the cutoff range.

Make an extensive list comprising your dream medical colleges as well as realistic, safe, and contingency options. This is after considering the previous cutoffs and looking at the current seat matrix.

Filling Colleges in the Wrong Order

The counseling hierarchy system starts reading choices from top to bottom, hence colleges placed at higher ranks will have precedence over colleges placed at lower ranks.

Order the colleges in accordance to the order of your real preference in joining the institution. Avoid copying other students' list since there will be variations in fees, locations, quota availability, and courses.

Forgetting to Lock Choices

The counseling portal may treat the process of saving options and that of locking the options separately. It is essential to lock the options before the window closes.

Ignoring College Fees

The private and deemed medical universities show great variability in the tuition fees. The prospective aspirants should confirm about the fees for admission before considering the university in their choice.

Hostel fees, security deposit, hike in annual fees, mess fees, and other mandatory charges have to be kept in mind. Rely on the fee structure provided by the counseling body/ institution.

Ignoring Bond and Service Conditions

Some institutions and even states require that the students serve the bond once they have completed their MBBS program. Leaving the bond early might come at a cost.

When choosing a college, one should consider the terms of the bond, which include its duration, cost of discontinuation, and even the institution where you will be serving the bond.

Claiming a Category without a Valid Certificate

Applicants who wish to apply under the categories of SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, or PwBD should provide valid certificates in the required format.

A certificate that is expired, or issued in the wrong format, or one that has been issued from a non-authorized office will lead to the cancellation of the application for reservations. The applicant can apply for the other category if possible or the seat can be vacated.

Entering Incorrect Personal Details

Inconsistency in details like the name, date of birth, sex, category, and parental details of the applicant between NEET score card, Aadhaar card, and the academic certificates would pose a problem.

Inconsistencies even in spellings could pose problems. In case of any inconsistencies, the candidate needs to produce proof through affidavit or other means.

Uploading Unclear Documents

In the process of verification online, images of the document that have been blurred, trimmed, or that do not appear complete could be rejected. This is because each document needs to be scanned correctly, so that the information on it including names, dates, signatures, seals, and certificate number is clear.

Using an Invalid Category or Domicile Certificate

The state’s counseling authorities have the discretion of setting their cut-off dates and forms for domicile, income, caste, and EWS certificates.

Kindly refer to the brochure issued by the state before applying under the reserved category or quota. Keep the originals of the certificates ready for verification purposes.

Missing the Reporting Deadline

The finalization of the admission process is not concluded by allotment of a seat. The candidates have to be present in the prescribed college after downloading their allotment letters, furnish the necessary papers, and make payment of admission fees before the stipulated time period.

If the candidates fail to appear, then the seat allotment may stand cancelled and will affect their chances for the future rounds of counselling.

Reporting without Original Documents

In the case of admissions at colleges, photocopied documents may not be sufficient to verify the information provided. Normally, medical colleges demand verification by inspecting original certificates before accepting the students for admission.

The candidates must carry the original documents with several self-attested copies. They may keep digital copies in their email or online accounts for quick retrieval purposes.

Giving Original Documents to Agents

Candidates should ensure that their documents are uploaded only through the official counseling portal. Candidates should avoid sharing their login information and OTPs with any agent. The payment should be made through the official portal only and receipts must be saved.

Leaving a Seat without Reading the Exit Rules

The exit and resignation policy differs from one round to another. There can be a situation where a free exit is allowed in early rounds but in later rounds, one can lose his/her deposit for exiting or other restrictions.

Find out whether the resignation should take place online, in college, or both ways. Retain the resignation acknowledgment after its completion.

Assuming MCC and State Rules are the same

The counselling process for MCC and state-level counselling follows a different schedule and guidelines. Simply completing the registration process on the MCC website does not make a student eligible for state quota counselling.

It is essential to keep different records for both portals. Prepare a calendar of important dates regarding registration, choice filling, allotment, and reporting.

Skipping the Official Notices

These dates may be extended or even changed, and the number of seats may also be either increased or decreased before the counselling rounds.

Check the websites of MCC and state counselling regularly during the admission process. Although social media sites can provide updates, official notices will help you take your decision.

Check State-specific Penalties

Every state has the right to have its own policy on admissions, resignations, and security deposit. Students seeking admission in more than one state must take reference from counseling brochures for that particular state.

There might be financial sanctions imposed by the state when the candidate leaves the seat and does not enroll. The imposition of such sanctions is conditional to the round, type of college, and reason for leaving.

Maharashtra has brought in a strict regulation for the last round of admissions. Those who gain admission in the last round and do not report or join, making the seat vacant, will be disqualified from gaining admission in the medical/dental colleges of Maharashtra for the next two years.

Consider the following points before making your final choice for NEET UG counseling:

• Government, private, or deemed institution
• Fees for tuition and hostel accommodation
• Duration of bond period and penalty in case of its non-payment
• Location of college
• Category and quota criteria
• Number of seats available
• Conditions regarding reporting
• Provisions about upgrading and resigning
• Accepted formats of documents along with their validities

Moreover, keep copies of the following documents: Registration form, payment confirmation, registered preferences, allocation letter, and admission confirmation. These documents will prove helpful in resolving any problem regarding payment or portal.
