NEET UG Result 2024 : Government and NTA Convene Panel to Assess Performance of 1,500 Students

NEET UG 2024 Result: The National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Union Education Ministry made an announcement on Saturday regarding the formation of a four-member committee. This committee will review the results of over 1,500 candidates who received "grace marks." These marks were awarded to compensate for the "loss of time" experienced during this year’s National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate).

The NEET-UG results this year sparked controversy, prompting demands from states like Maharashtra for a retest and from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for a Supreme Court-monitored probe into alleged discrepancies highlighted by students on social media.

The results, announced on June 4, caught attention for the unusually high number of candidates scoring a perfect 720/720. Some candidates even scored 718 or 719 marks, which others claimed were unattainable within the exam's framework. Allegations of a paper leak have also surfaced, although the NTA denies such claims.

NTA Director General Subodh Kumar Singh dismissed irregularities in the results, attributing the surge in top rankers to a relatively easier paper and the agency's decision to award additional marks to students with delayed exam starts. However, Singh acknowledged a committee's formation to scrutinize the results of the 1,500 candidates who received grace marks.

The committee comprises a former UPSC chairman and three academicians, who have commenced investigations and are expected to reach a verdict before the upcoming Saturday. The NTA clarified that this decision wouldn't affect other results or the ongoing MBBS counselling process.

Currently, 1,563 students, including six top rankers, received grace marks based on a normalization formula undisclosed by the NTA. These candidates were from six different centers across India. Meanwhile, students have filed petitions in various high courts, challenging aspects of the exam.

In a bid to address concerns, the Delhi High Court listed a writ petition for hearing on June 12, challenging the final answer key and compensatory time allocation. Similarly, the Calcutta High Court directed the NTA to disclose its adherence to reservation policies while preparing the merit list. Another petition awaits hearing before the Supreme Court on July 8.

NTA declared the NEET UG 2024 result 10 days earlier than scheduled, with a record-breaking 67 students achieving the top rank. The exam serves as a gateway to various medical and allied courses.

The NEET UG cut-off saw an increase this year across categories. For UR/EWS candidates, it rose to 720-164 from 720-137 last year. Likewise, for SC, ST, and OBC candidates, the cut-off increased to 163-129 from 136-107 previously.

Besides social media uproar, political figures like Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin have voiced concerns over the results, advocating for a high-level investigation under the Supreme Court's supervision.
