OBC Students With Low NEET Scores: Where Can You Get MBBS Admission?

The cutoff score for the OBC category for NEET UG 2026 is the 40th percentile. The qualifying marks in this regard are between 212 to 177. Hence, an OBC candidate needs to have scored a minimum of 177 marks to qualify for the counseling.

However, getting a qualifying score and securing a seat in MBBS is not the same thing. Qualifying NEET will enable one to be part of the admission procedure. However, it does not mean that one will get admitted to any government/private/deemed medical colleges.

Registration for MCC NEET UG Counseling 2026 Round 1 has commenced. The MCC conducts the counseling for 15% All India Quota government seats, deemed universities, central universities, AIIMS, JIPMER and many other institutions. State quota counseling is done independently by the respective states.

What Score Is Needed for a Government MBBS Seat?

The latest government MBBS NEET 2026 cutoff cannot be obtained since the counselling process is currently ongoing.

Any site or counsellor who claims to provide you with a safe score is only doing so based on an estimation since the actual cutoff will not be known until the counselling process is complete.

Your chances of admission are based on a number of considerations, which include the following:

• NEET AIR
• Rank within OBC category
• Domicile of State
• State or All India Quota
• Number of Seats
• College Preferences
• Round of Counselling

It should also be noted that the Medical Counselling Committee makes it clear that registration does not guarantee a seat.

The below-mentioned information may help you in understanding your position among the ranks.

The following are a few of the scores and ranks published by the NTA. Your rank is mentioned on your NEET 2026 scorecard.

For the present year, the importance of rank is greater than only comparing your marks with the last year’s cut-off because of the changing pattern of questions asked in the exam.

Do not take this table as your college predictor. See your rank, rank in your category, past cut-off ranks, fee structure, and seats matrix before choice filling.

What Can OBC Students Do With a Low NEET Score?

You still have four practical routes.

1. Participate in Both MCC and State Counselling

Do not solely rely on MCC counselling.

MCC generally deals with 15% All India Quota government seats and seats at deemed universities and other institutions taking part in the process. The state governments organize counselling for state quota seats and numerous private medical colleges.

State quota OBC criteria and cut-offs might be different from AIQ quota criteria. An OBC score that fails to compete in AIQ may still leave you a chance under your state quota based on domicile, rank and availability of seats.

For OBC quota under the MCC counselling process, the applicant should have an OBC-NCL certificate from the Central List of OBCs. Also, the applicant should be of the non-creamy layer status. Simply possessing a state OBC certificate will not suffice for claiming AIQ OBC quota.

Participate in all the counselling processes where you are eligible. Failure to participate in the process means you will miss out despite having vacant seats in subsequent rounds.

2. Explore Private and Deemed University MBBS Seats

Privately and Deemed Medical Colleges usually shut down at lower ranks compared to Government colleges. But, the fees could be significantly high.

Counselling in MCC takes place for all Deemed University MBBS seats. Candidates need to register themselves along with payment of fees and filling of preferences in the counselling procedure.

Before adding any college preference, check the following:

• Tuition Fee per year
• Hostel and Mess Fee
• Security Deposit Fee
• Internship Fee
• Service Bond Fee
• Other Compulsory Fees
• Total Fee for the entire MBBS Course

MCC recommends checking the fee structure with the College itself before opting for the Deemed Universities. The preferences will not be altered once they are locked for a specific session.

Don’t prefer an expensive college simply because there is an MBBS seat available. Calculate first whether your family can afford the total expense of the course.

3. Consider BDS, AYUSH and Allied Health Courses

A low NEET score does not imply the end of your medical career.

Courses which you may consider include:

• BDS
• BAMS
• BHMS
• BUMS
• BSc Nursing
• Bachelor of Physiotherapy
• Bachelor of Pharmacy
• Medical Laboratory Technology
• Radiology & Imaging Technology
• Operation Theatre Technology

While BDS and AYUSH admission depend upon NEET scores, the closing rank in such courses tends to be lesser than those of government MBBS closing rank.

The admission criteria for BSc Nursing varies from college to college. The Medical Counseling Committee uses NEET UG for admission to BSc Nursing in participating Central institutes, whereas other colleges/states use a different procedure altogether.

Similarly, BPT, BPharm and all other allied courses may be based upon class 12 marks, state level entrance examination, or institute level criteria. You may know the rules of admission before applying to them.

Select a course based on its syllabus, career scope, licensing requirements, cost and salary. Do not base the selection of the program just because of low cutoffs.

4. Take a Drop and Repeat NEET

The drop year can come handy if you have a concrete plan for improvement.

Analyse your past record of mock tests and performance in subjects. Consider the following questions:

• How much improvement in marks do I need?
• Which subjects brought down my score?
• Have I completed the entire syllabus?
• Is the reason behind my poor score the lack of preparation, revision or strategy?
• Am I able to study consistently for another year?

It makes sense to choose a drop year when you are near your target mark and understand what you lost.

But when the gap between your current mark and target mark is wide, then don’t choose the drop year only due to pressure from others. Analyse the drop year along with private MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and allied courses.

One Important Point Most Students Miss

Don’t wait only for the mop up or stray vacancy round.

Register from Round 1 and choose your colleges wisely. Students who do not register in the permissible time frame may not be eligible for joining some future rounds.

Select a balanced choice list. Start with colleges that you aspire to join, then move to realists, and finally include safeties. Do not just select five or ten very famous colleges if your ranks are very poor.

Check the guidelines before exiting from a seat. The MCC guidelines on exit, resignation and security deposits keep changing round-wise. Non-admission to a seat allotted in Round 2 or other rounds may lead to loss of your security deposit.

What Should You Do Now?

Registration for MCC Round 1 is open, so you shouldn’t waste time on your counselling process.

Go for the MCC counselling and state counselling separately. You should have NEET result card, admit card, class 10 and class 12 mark sheets, ID proof, domicile certificate, and latest OBC-NCL certificate at hand.

• Make three list of colleges:
• Government colleges for MBBS
• Private or deemed medical colleges at affordable price
• BDS, AYUSH, and other allied health colleges as backup

Poor NEET score cuts down your options, but does not eliminate all of them. Your decision-making should take into account your ranks, states, budget, and future goals.
