SC on NEET-UG: No Cancellation Due to Integrity, but NTA Must Avoid Flip-Flops

The Supreme Court has released a detailed judgement explaining why it rejected petitions calling for the cancellation and re-test of the NEET-UG 2024 exam. The CJI-led bench stated that there was no systematic breach of the exam's sanctity, though it emphasized that the NTA needs to maintain consistency.

Additionally, the Centre-appointed panel, headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, will review the NTA's functioning and recommend exam reforms. The top court has set a deadline of September 30 for the panel to submit its report to address deficiencies in the examination system.

The bench highlighted that the Radhakrishnan panel should consider creating a standard operating procedure to adopt technological advancements to enhance the examination system. The Supreme Court also stressed that the issues that arose during the NEET-UG examination should be addressed by the Centre.

Last month, the SC bench delivered an interim verdict on multiple petitions seeking a re-test of NEET-UG 2024. It acknowledged a leak had occurred but stated that a re-test would only be necessary if the breach was systemic and affected the integrity of the entire process. The decision would also depend on whether it was possible to separate those who benefited from the fraud from the unaffected students.

Meanwhile, the NTA has released the revised NEET UG results, and the counselling process has begun.
