NEET UG 2024: SC Denies Cancellation, Accepts IIT-Delhi's Physics Question Report

The Supreme Court has decided there will be no re-test for the NEET UG exam. Canceling the exam and allowing a re-test would disrupt the medical education schedule, said Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. “The Court realizes that directing a fresh NEET UG for the present year would have serious consequences for over 24 lakh students who appeared in NEET and cause disruption of the admission schedule,” CJI Chandrachud explained.

Paper Leak Confirmed in Hazaribagh

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed to the Supreme Court that there was a paper leak at the Hazaribagh center. However, senior advocate Narender Hooda argued, “Since the mobile phones have still not been recovered, we cannot say the leak did not take place beyond Patna and Hazaribagh.”

IIT Delhi Report Accepted

The Bench received a report from IIT Delhi, led by director Prof. Banerjee, which stated that option 4 is the correct answer. Considering this report and statements from the National Testing Agency (NTA), the Centre, and petitioners, CJI said, “We accept the IIT Delhi report and accordingly, NTA shall re-tally the NEET UG results based on option 4.”

Hearings and Petitions

The bench, including CJI DY Chandrachud, Justices J B Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, started hearing NEET UG 2024 related petitions on June 8. They have since heard petitions from students, NTA, and other stakeholders in three different sessions, with the final one being today.

Spotlight on NEET UG 2024

NEET UG 2024 gained attention when the NTA announced results 10 days early on June 4, the same day as the Lok Sabha election results. Allegations of paper leaks and other irregularities led to several petitions in the Supreme Court and different High Courts, all of which were combined and heard on June 8, June 18, and June 22.

Supreme Court Directive on Results

On July 18, the Supreme Court directed the NTA to publish the results of all NEET UG candidates by Saturday at 12 pm on their website, city-wise and center-wise, while masking the identity of the aspirants.

Previous Retest for 1563 Candidates

Earlier, the NTA announced a retest for 1563 candidates who were originally awarded grace marks due to a loss of exam time. The retest was conducted in the same six affected cities but at different exam centers. The 1563 candidates were told their original ‘pre-grace marks’ scores and given a choice to reappear for the exam. According to senior NTA officials, 52 percent (813 out of 1,563 candidates) appeared for the retest. The remaining candidates will be given their original scores.
