Supreme Court Seeks Centre's Reply on NEET-SS 2024 Cancellation Plea

On Friday, the Supreme Court asked the Centre and other parties to respond to a petition challenging the National Medical Commission's (NMC) decision to skip the NEET-Super Speciality exam in 2024.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Super Speciality (NEET-SS) is for doctors with post-graduate degrees such as MD, MS, or DNB, seeking admission to super-speciality courses.

A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and including Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra heard from a lawyer representing 13 applicants. They argued that the NMC decided not to hold the exam this year.

Reports suggest that NEET-SS might take place in January 2025. The court issued notices to the Centre, Medical Counselling Committee, and the NMC, allowing petitioners Rahul Balwan and 12 others to add the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to the case. The hearing is scheduled for July 26.

The petitioners cited a previous ruling that requires NEET-SS to be held annually and noted that the Supreme Court had already set a timeline for admissions to super-speciality courses. The lawyer explained that the postponement might be due to delays in medical course admissions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
