The Supreme Court on Monday announced that the next hearing on the NEET UG case will be held on July 11. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, comprising the other two justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, was hearing around 30 petitions today.
The apex court has directed the CBI to submit a report stating the status of the investigation. Besides, the judges have directed the NTA to apprise it of the time period between the question paper leak and the exam being conducted on May 5.

The CJI directed the NTA to clarify on the basis of information available till date (1) when the leak of question papers took place, the manner in which the question papers were leaked/circulated, and (3) the time period between the leak and the actual conduct of the examination. Further, the NTA has been asked to disclose the steps taken so far to identify the beneficiaries: (1) steps taken by the NTA to identify the centres/cities where the leak took place, (2) modus operandi adopted for identification and (3) number of students identified as beneficiaries so far.
Further, the CJI told the Solicitor General that 'if any committee has already been constituted, full details should be made available to the court. The CJI said that the court can then consider whether the committee should be allowed to proceed or the composition should be modified.
Lawyers representing the petitioner said they were seeking cancellation of the exam on grounds such as paper leak, manipulation of OMR sheets, impersonation and cheating. Hearing the case, Justice Chandrachud said "Is it possible for a court or an expert to identify red flags... 720/720 is one of them. Not all students are cheaters, some may be very smart... We need to see how many of the 1563 candidates are cheaters."
This development comes after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 was postponed till further notice. Earlier, the NEET UG All India Quota (AIQ) seat counselling was scheduled to begin on July 6.
Various coaching institutes, students and parents had filed petitions in the Supreme Court over NEET UG 2024 held on May 5. In these petitions, the petitioners have alleged paper leak, some have sought cancellation of the entire exam and re-conduct of the medical entrance exam, some have sought an inquiry into the conduct of NTA, etc.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) also conducted a re-examination for NEET UG for some students who got grace marks in the medical exam. With the revised results, the number of toppers has come down from 67 to 61, as six candidates - whose scores had become perfect 720/720 after the grace marks were given due to loss of exam time - failed to get a perfect score in the re-examination. However, they repeated the high scores of above 680.
Meanwhile, the education ministry, in its affidavit filed in the apex court last week, has admitted that there were “instances of irregularities, cheating, impersonation, malpractice” during the conduct of NEET UG, however, there is no mention of paper leak. It further said that “in the absence of any evidence of any large-scale breach of secrecy in the all-India examination, it would not be rational to cancel the entire examination”.
The NEET UG exam is conducted by the NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutes across the country. NEET-UG 2024 was held on May 5 at 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.
